Harold Washington Library Author Series (Listen UP!)

Check out these upcoming author talks at the Harold Washington Library.

Catherine O’Connell will be reading from and discussing her new book, “Well Read and Dead,” the second in her Pauline Cook mystery series on Wednesday, June 3, at 6 p.m. in the Chicago Authors Room, 7th floor.

Harold Holzer, U.S. co-chairman of the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and editor of “The Lincoln Anthology,” will speak on Tuesday, June 16, at 6 p.m. in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium.  Holzer has authored, co-authored, and edited more than 33 books, including “Lincoln as I Knew Him,” and “In Lincoln’s Hand.”

Writers on the Record with Victoria Lautman presents Monica Ali, author of the best-selling novel “Brick Lane” on Thursday, June 18, at 6 p.m. in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium.  Ali will discuss her latest novel, “In the Kitchen.”

Bradford Morrow will present “My Willa Cather,” the keynote program of the 2009 International Cather Seminar: Cather, Chicago & Modernism, on Thursday, June 25, at 6 p.m. in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium.  Morrow has written many novels, including “Come Sunday,” and “Giovanni’s Gift.” The event is presented in partnership with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Willa Cather Foundation.

The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission presents Henry Louis Gates Jr., in Conversation with Rick Kogan, Monday, June 29, at 6 p.m. in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium.  The event will look at how stories shape history and how history shapes stories.

Author Talk (Listen UP!)

Please join us for a special event featuring local Chicago authors!

On Saturday, May 30, StoryStudio is hosting Stephanie Kuehnert (authors of “I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone” and “Ballads of Suburbia”), Simone Elkeles (author of “Perfect Chemistry,” “Leaving Paradise,” and others), and Wendy McClure (author of “I’m not the New Me”).

Come with all your writing, publishing, or marketing questions!  The talk will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Aleksandar Hemon & Jacob Weisberg: The Future of the Book (Listen UP!)

Aleksandar Hemon and Jacob Weisenberg will be discussing the art of writing and publishing Tuesday, June 2, at The Chicago Cultural Center.  The panel begins at 6 p.m. and is moderated by Victoria Lautman, host of “Writers on the Record with Victoria Lautman,” a partnership between the Chicago Public Library and 98.7 WFMT.

StoryStudio Writers Read Showcase – May 21st! (Listen UP!)

As part of the Pilcrow Literary Festival, StoryStudio Chicago is hosting a Writers Read Showcase on Thursday, May 21st.  The event kicks off at 42 Degrees N. Latitude at 7 p.m.

StoryStudio students Kelley Clink, Jen Coffeen, Mark Lofgren as well as staff member Marissa Spalding, will delight us with their poetry and prose. 

42 Degrees N. Latitude is located at 4500 N. Lincoln Ave., just a quick walk from the Western Brown Line stop.  The reading is free and open to the public.  We hope to see you there!

Anhinga Writers’ Studio Summer Workshop (Listen UP!)

Thinking of taking a summer vacation?  The Anhinga Writers’ Studio is hosting their 2009 Summer Workshops in Gainesville, Florida from July 29 to August 1.  Workshops cover fiction, romance, mystery, poetry, and narrative nonfiction.  The cost is only $395 (or $375 if you register by May 15).  For more information, check out Anhingawriters.org
