So last week Ranjit Souri mentioned something about the personal essay website, Fresh Yarn. While teaching Composition at Columbia College I had used several personal essays from this site for class readings. What is pretty unique about this particular site is that the featured essays are written by people from all sorts of professions. I have read several essays by comedians and also film producers. Another great facet of this website is that in order to really capture and zone in on what is currently going within the personal essay form(ula) the site chooses to hone in on a few selected essays each month. I chose to have my students read from Fresh Yarn because in so many ways it highlights what the genre really does and is capable of doing for the writer. Most of the essays are pretty short which is makes it an ample place to find examples that can help your essays take on the task of brevity.
