Friday Story Starter: An Imaginary Life

I admit it.  Last week, I stalked my ex-boyfriend via MySpace.  People told me that he wasn’t doing so well, and my natural inclination toward schadenfreude overwhelmed logic’s last tenuous hold on my behavior.  Fortunately for him (but not for me), he’s lost a bunch of weight and looks way hotter than he ever did when we were together.

I wish I hadn’t checked.  The several alternative endings I had created for my elaborate fantasies involved me come out the victor in our months-old breakup; now that I knew the truth, the only end results I could come up were me bursting into tears, saying something terrible, dying a lonely martyr’s death, or some combination of the three.

So for today’s prompt: instead of doing stupid things in real life, write them down.  You’ve been fantasizing about quitting your job and moving to Canada to protest the result of the upcoming presidential election?  Write about it as though it’s actually happening.  What would you do in Canada?  What would you take with you?  What about story about the road trip to Alberta?

Not only is this a great way to start a story, but it keeps you from acting stupid.  Most of the time anyway.

Happy writing!
